New to Amahi and setting up servers in general. Not sure which section would be best for this question. If this is the wrong section please move.
I setup Amahi all because I was going to get a 1TB external hard drive and for some idea got a brilliant idea of running my first server. Figured hey why not learn something new.
Setup on an old computer I have and an old WD 80 gig hard drive. Amahi is up and running fine.
I was wondering which type of hard drive i should be looking at will a WD green be ok? Been reading about the two different drives. The green is at a nice price point but I dont want it to not work or crash.
I was looking at adding a 1 TB to start with the other 80 gig I currently have will that be ok?
Plan on just using it for streaming and storing music etc and backing up some files just incase computers crash
Thanks in advance
Recommended Hard Drive WD Green or Red or something else?
Re: Recommended Hard Drive WD Green or Red or something else
Sounds fine to me based on your intended use. I typically read reviews on the drives before I buy. Cost is also a factor too of course.
Might consider having 2 extra drives then you can use Greyhole for file replication. Always a good idea to have multiple copies of files in case a drive crashes.

Re: Recommended Hard Drive WD Green or Red or something else
Got ya...might hold out till I can find a good deal on 1 TB hard drives. So if I Buy x2 1 TB I wont have 2 TB (plus my current 80gig) I would just have 1 TB if using grey hole?
Also whats the best way to check if my hard drive is constantly spinning. Since I really dont need it going constantly not using for a web server or anything like that

Re: Recommended Hard Drive WD Green or Red or something else
Sort of as you control what shares and how many copies you want to maintain.
You will have to check the internet for guidance about checking the drives for activity. Understand that Amahi does use a web server. That is how you access the dashboard, via a web browser.
I don't see a need for concern on hard drive spinning. I have been using Amahi for 6 years and still have the same hard drives. I think I did replace one, but considering they have a life span of 3-5 years that's not bad.
