Preferred Equipment For A Clean Easy Start with Amahi.

Postby jedouglas429 » Sat Aug 02, 2014 8:28 pm

I haven't been around this forum very long, not sure if you use stickies here.... Before posting this I did a search on preferred equipment, found nothing.

It seems common that people are starting using older PC/machines and existing ISP networking gear and are running into trouble.

My troubles too. I really don't like the Comcast Gateway thats locked down setting-wise and I currently rent for $8 a month.

Lets say I decide to say heck with rental charge and try to find my own modem and router.

If I was to go this direction;

1) What specifications should I be looking for on a new cable modem and a router to use with Amahi?
2) Is there a gateway that can be used so I don't have to buy both?
3) What brands seems to be the easiest to configure?
4) What should I completely stay away from when comes to networking gear. (Like my current Technicolor Gateway TC8503C)

Hello,

You can add a router on you network and limit the Comcast to providing a gateway to the router. There are many different modems and routers that we have seen in the past.

I personally have a Cisco modem provided by my ISP and use a Cisco E3000 router with DD-WRT firmware. Have had no issues.

You can get an idea of routers used with Amahi by looking in the wiki.

This link reflects links to the company web sites for some of the common ones used.
