Hardware Enablement Stack message

Postby kcgr » Sat Jul 12, 2014 3:09 pm

I got this message this AM while I was doing updates:

Your current Hardware Enablement Stack (HWE) is going out of support
on 08/07/14. After this date security updates for critical parts (kernel
and graphics stack) of your system will no longer be available.

For more information, please see:
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/1204_HWE_EOL

To upgrade to a supported (or longer supported) configuration:

* Upgrade from Ubuntu 12.04 LTS to Ubuntu 14.04 LTS by running:
sudo do-release-upgrade -p

OR

* Install a newer HWE version by running:
sudo apt-get install linux-generic-lts-trusty linux-image-generic-lts-trusty

and reboot your system.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I know support has shifted to Fedora, but can someone explain what this means and the Amahi implications of each option to a newbie?

thanks!

definitely do not update to 14.04, because that will really break things with Amahi.

honestly, for a home server, these "critical" issues are hardly critical inside a trusted network, where the host is not directly exposed to the wild internet.

if you want to update to the latest HWE with the recommended
sudo apt-get install linux-generic-lts-trusty linux-image-generic-lts-trusty

is up to you. there could be some risk that things could break, but i think within 12.04 it may well be relatively small (my opinion, founded on experience, not hard facts).

Is the upgrade to only the newer HWE un-installable? So in the unlikely event that something does break (but I can get to a terminal), I can undo the HWE upgrade?

I only have it on to backup another server once a week for approx 10 hours, but I try to keep it up to date as much as possible as I tinker and learn more about Linux. This may be something to leave as-is.

Anyone else just upgrade the HWE only without issues?

thanks

To answer you question, you will need to check with Ubuntu. If it was me, I would leave it alone or upgrade to Fedora 19.

Our support of Ubuntu is currently limited to maintenance support, so no new features or apps/updates will be completed.

migration will be a be a huge J-O-B. I'll check with ubuntu out of curiosity, but I suspect that I'll be riding this one into the sunset, since I have it setup just as I need.

Thanks for the support as always.

No problem. Might be worth the time to start documenting a way to back up specific settings you would migrate to a new Amahi version.

This would make it easier down the road when you want/have to upgrade to a different version. I kinda have that for myself. Mostly a word document with what needs backed up, database, app stuff, etc.

We hope to add some of this to Amahi 8, but not sure how in depth it will be. Won't be a simple upgrade/migration feat I am sure.

Last question (I hope): The instructions for getting the Ubuntu version onto a headless HP mediasmart server were pretty decent, though scattered. I had to install on another computer then perform a transplant. Is the Fedora install expected to be that different? I did a search and didn't see anyone posting instructions about putting Amahi 7 on a mediasmart unit.

I thought someone added some guidance to the wiki, but could be mistaken. Should be a very similar process. If you would like to add Amahi 7 specific guidance to the wiki, that would be great.

UPDATE: This might help.
