Printer Help

Postby bigdogkc » Sun Feb 09, 2014 8:53 pm

I installed 7 off of the express DVD and all went well, but I have no options for my USB deskjet printer. This is my first experience with Linux, so maybe I am missing something obvious. The instructions I found on here, say that it should find the printer automatically, but no such luck.

I appreciate any assistance you all can give me.

Thanks

Matt Robertson

Did you check the wiki for guidance? It will not automatically find the printer without some manual setup.

Thank you very much for your quick reply. I did see this link: https://wiki.amahi.org/index.php/Adding ... ed_printer

But not: https://wiki.amahi.org/index.php/Cups

I will try that tonight. I am very excited to learn how to work with this platform!!

Glad to help. When the HDA had a Desktop GUI, it was easier for printer installs. HOpe it works for you.

well I am struggling with something like this.
I have installed amahi and initialized it as standard. I've installed cups (as root yum -y install cups) and have vnc server running (as user account with admin privileges). I have nano and links installed also as root. I can connect to vnc from another machine (windows) as per spec.

I've read
https://www.amahi.org/faq/i-want-to-add ... do-i-do-it
https://wiki.amahi.org/index.php/Adding ... ed_printer
http://www.linuxdevcenter.com/pub/a/lin ... samba.html
https://wiki.amahi.org/index.php/Cups

and there are a couple of things I simply don't understand.

1. In https://wiki.amahi.org/index.php/Cups I get stuck at the point where it says "Navigate to the Links configuration page" - there is no administration tab in any part of the links menu and nothing I can find in the help. Connecting to localhost works but localhost:631 is connection denied. I simply don't understand the instructions. Also I don't entirely understand what the webapp is or does, but it seems that it is a way to access setup of cups (but are we running a webapp on the hda machine or what is going on?)

2. When I connect to the VNC with ultravnc client (on port 5903 - http://hda:3/) I get a connection and a grey desktop type view, but it is not exactly obvious how I do anything with that (no icons except the standard ones for the vncclient) - on the HDA I haven't installed gnome, kde or anything and I haven't changed anything in the config files for vncserver. Do I need to do that?

3. In http://www.linuxdevcenter.com/pub/a/lin ... samba.html it says to download some adobe drivers and then goes into a lot about windows workgroups (I don't use that) and other that is frankly just quite daunting. Is there someone who can advise on parts of that page, that are essential or not?

I really need this print server setup and working so I am cracking on, but it is really heavy duty work on the cmd line and I am in a bit over my head, despite having run first ubuntu and then fedora for the past couple of years, so any help is much appreciated. I should add I have no experience with cups, samba or links, so spell it out please :)

It is a lot simpler than the wiki indicates. We do need to update the pages. I have been using CUPS for a PDF printer as my normal printer is networked.

I will try to update the wiki to outline the steps to set it up via command line. It's really just adjusting some lines in the config file and restarting the service. Once that is done, then you can access the web UI for managing the printers.

UPDATE: This might help too. viewtopic.php?f=9&t=5035&p=27812&hilit=cups#p27812

I can understand that. I thought the person who wrote that article was going to update the wiki. I guess I thought wrong. I try to get the users involved in updating it as I have my plate full with apps and a full time job.

If that guidance works well for you, I will try to get it in the wiki for others.

I was always encountering problems while trying to request an account for editing the wiki-pages.
I just gave it another try! and whoala!!! the page seems to be correct! and I am waiting for my account :)
