SOLVED: Apps and Initial User

Postby tomsserver » Tue Jan 07, 2014 10:38 am

Okay, I did the following:

1. Installed Amahi 7.1, turn off dhcp on my router, let amahi handle dhcp
2. on another computer I opened http://hda.home.net - looking good - see the initial screen and shares
3. I created a user during install with admin rights, user1, and I can log in under that user
4. I can not log in as root - is that normal?
5. logged in as user1, downloaded my first app called maps - worked great by simply going to http://maps.home.net
6. downloaded gallery 2 - it says something about an initial user admin:admin but clicking on it just brings me back to the hda screen with the icon
7. tried wecalendar, it also has an initial user, got the same behavior
8. there is no admin user - so I created one - logged out of user1 into admin - neither gallery2 nor the webcalendar app work regardless of user

Everything seems to be working with the basic server, but I guess I don't understand what to do with apps having the initial user set. It's probably obvious, but please help. certainly not exploring any further until I get past the, what would seem to be, a trivial problem.

Yes, root user only exists on command line as it's a privileged user.
6. downloaded gallery 2 - it says something about an initial user admin:admin but clicking on it just brings me back to the hda screen with the icon
7. tried wecalendar, it also has an initial user, got the same behavior
Each app may have different log in credentials. They are separate from your dashboard user. So after you install the app, there will be info about initial user name and password. That is what you use to log into the app, not the dashboard user. This is by design.
8. there is no admin user - so I created one - logged out of user1 into admin - neither gallery2 nor the webcalendar app work regardless of user
The user you created on install is your admn user. It is independent of apps as mentioned above. Each app will typically use admin/admin as login credentials. You can change that as you see fit. Remember, your HDA users are not the same as app users.

If you are having issues accessing apps, recommend you run the network troubleshooter.

Well, I don't think it's a network issue. Everything seems to work fine including apps that DON"T have an INITIAL USER. It's just that every app I've installed with initial user info never goes to any kind of startup screen where I could login and change a password.

Some have admin links that you use to do that function. Maybe I am missing something. Can you provide a screen shot of one of the apps? I can then better assist.

I rebooted and things got real bad. No hda. I figured I had nothing to lose at that point, so I did a yum update (even though I read somewhere in a read me NOT to do that), rebooted and everything works now. I had done a vanilla install with 7.1. You have a problem with your image. There are various threads hinting at the same problem solution although usually they just did an individual file update and never really specified what or how.

Anyone else that can't get apps to start (login is never loaded), or loses your hda (no http server) JUST:

sudo yum -y update

I don't believe there is anything wrong with the image. There must have been something that went wrong on install or possibly a corrupt download. I just installed 2 days ago and no issues. I did not do a yum update and everything is working fine.

There are many things that can go wrong on install, but hard to detect. The main thing here is you got it working. We will continue to monitor installs and adjust if problems are detected.
