Several serious questions

Postby LronMcBong » Mon Dec 02, 2013 7:38 am

Hi there,

Im new to Amahi, first tried it about 2 weeks ago and have to say the first impression was good and simple, but here are the "buts".... ( i have to mention i never used ubuntu or s.th. like this ever before, but adding some extra disks was quite simple and worked very well :D )

This is a general idea what i tried to do:

In general i tried to set up an file storage server, that is simply using my old hard disk drives that are lying arround. So i got an old Pentium4 2.53Ghz with about 8drives with the sizes: 250gb, 500gb, 500gb, 500gb, 80gb, 80gb,80gb and 76gb and another 2TB drive to come on later on.
The plan was to wake up the computer via WOL which works very well and shut it down in the night or if simply not needed via settings. Works quite well, too but its a little bit stupid to always enter the setup. But that doenst matter that much......
The server is conncted to a 10/100/1000 switch wich is full duplex capable with 200mbit/s. the servers network device is able to handle 100mbit, my win7 desktop can handle 1000mbit and the laptop i simply dont know but dont mind, cause its connected per d-lan connecter.
so the idea to switch on the server, watch a movie, switch it off works well but i have some serious issues with amahi and using the greyhole.

the first one occured when i coppied - or better: when i wanted to copy all my stuff to the amahi server. I occasionally started copyiing about midnight and later on the landing zone was cleared - fine!
later that night i copied the rest of it and the LZ was filled, but not cleared. Ok, i found out that i have to force greyhole to clear it via
sudo greyhole --fsck --> for some reason this command line didnt work out at once. i had to try sometimes but later on it worked.
But now im having the problem, that the landing zone is automatically cleared, when copiying files into the landing zone. is that normal? i also tried several times to "undo" the --fsck command but this somehow doesnt show any reaction. its always starting to clear the landing zone when im trying to copy files onto the server.

the next problem that occured is: i can copy filmes onto the drive quite fast which goes with arround 30meg/s and i think its a good speed for such an old hardware. but im simply not able to copy photos, documents and so on. i tried to copie my master thesis wich was arround 4gig and 10k files, but it took REALLY long time to copy. But that worked. If im trying to copy all the photos ive got its simply not starting.
the only thing i see is the "box" in windows 7 thats trying to move the data but its simply nothing happening.
when i remotly log in per "putty" its just saying:

Dec 02 15:26:22 7 sleep: Nothing to do... Sleeping.
Dec 02 15:26:32 7 read_smb_spool: Processing Samba spool...
Dec 02 15:26:32 7 sleep: Nothing to do... Sleeping.

but im trying to get data on the server.....

the next point id like to mention is, that in between a week or less the log file got arround 250megabytes in size? is that normal???? do i have to kill the file manually every week? ( i mean delete it )???

another point id like to mention - and i REALLY dont understand:
id like to switch off the dhcp process in the settings - but it doesnt seem to work. when i installed amahi first time it says that there are no dhcp leases working at any time.
the i tried to switch it off....now i have TWO of them running? Why?

honestly ive got an router, thats giving fixed ips to the computers arround and i dont want to mess with my dad whos paying fo it! so why is there an option to switch it off, but it does.....somehow it does like its wants to do and not as i intended it to do. ive read that the only option to turn it off is to kill the files responsible for the dhcp service (please dont ask me for the exakt file / command).

so to sum this whole mess up id like to know:
1.) is it a bug, that greyhole is clearing the landing zone at once i start copying files
2.) is it normal that it takes several hours to copy a lot of small files instead 1 big one?
3.) how to disable the dhcp cause every time the server is up and i plug in a new device it doesnt get connected / and or if i switch down the server i have to reboot my desktop to get into the internet
4.) what about the size of the log file / how to handle it?
greetings

p.s. now it started copying the files...lets see how long it takes

Seriously doubt it's a bug. I believe it is normal for it to start moving files, especially if you have a small LZ and copy a large quantity of files to it.
2.) is it normal that it takes several hours to copy a lot of small files instead 1 big one?
I would say it's not, but depends on if the HDA is busy moving files already. It can only do so much, especially with old hardware.
3.) how to disable the dhcp cause every time the server is up and i plug in a new device it doesnt get connected / and or if i switch down the server i have to reboot my desktop to get into the internet
The DHCP can be turned off. There is guidance in the wiki, which by the way, is our repository for tutorials and how to stuff.

4.) what about the size of the log file / how to handle it?
It can get quite large from doing a lot of file operations. It should rotate eventually or you can force it. To do so, just do as root user:

Code: Select all

touch /var/hda/greyhole.log
It sounds as if you are using Ubuntu. We no longer support Ubuntu. Amahi 7 on Fedora 19 is the latest. It would be best if you moved to that version if you have not done much so far with Ubuntu. It is well worth the move as things work faster and more efficiently. Only downfall is you have to manually set up Greyhole. The wiki does provide detailed instructions.

If you want to learn more about how Greyhole works, recommend you check out the wiki and/or the web site.

Hope this helps.
