Is there a walkthrough I can use to setup the smart diskmonitor to email only when a problem comes up. I've read this: https://wiki.amahi.org/index.php/Disk_Error_Alerts. Unless, I'm misreading it, emails are sent out daily for each disk (which I don't want). Further digging led me to this: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Smartmontools and it looks like what I need.
What I'm thinking of trying (once smartmontools is verified to be running) is to use the info in the second link to setup the smartd.conf file per the "Advanced" section. Then I'd add the bits down in the "Server" section (near the bottom) to setup email (but no shutdown) IF a problem comes up. I'm thinking of running the check at every boot. Of course I need to make sure the "sendmail package" is turned on too.
Any issues or comments for this approach?
Some other info:
1) I'm a newbie
2) My installation is headless on an HP mediasmart WHS box with 4 drives in it. Everything working nicely.
3) I mainly run the server during the weekend to serve as backup for another server and to tinker and learn.
thanks in advance!
SMART tools question
Re: SMART tools question
I had this set up previously on my server and only got emails when there was an issue. I would suggest trying the wiki method first and see how it works.
If it does not meet your needs, you can always go the other route.
