I am thinking of building a home server. I have used Ubuntu many years ago, and ended up back with Windows. So am pretty much at the beginners end here. All three home machines have used Windows 7 Ultimate and connected via Homegroup at one point, and I used to stream movies n such via that, but gave up due to PC issues.
The PC's are old LGA-775 systems, I am putting off any new build until later this year.
I have a few HDD's spread among these machines, two Samsung F3 1TB, two 500GB Samsung F3, a 1.5TB WD green, 4TB Hitachi, and an external 1TB Verbatim. And there is also an old Mac PowerPC G4 DP AGP that rarely gets used..
I would rather centralize all files, with all PC's being able to save, access, and backup to one source that I have read/write administration over. I would like to stream, use mobile devices and phones with DLNA, and access remote via phone or a work Mac or PC too. Now most say get a Nas, or add USB storage to a DLNA router such as the new Asus. But I have this old hardware to utilize and am not even sure what I will need in future.
Thinking of getting a Fractal Define R4 case, and adding the Gigabyte EP45-DS3P Rev-1 mobo, with Q9550 and 8gb of Corsair PC8500. That system has an HD-4870 GPU, and a 630w PSU.
I have the option of Amahi or Windows Server 2012, but what has the most features and is most suited to a complete noob

And I am not sure what I want to do with HDD's.
