Login to Router

After countless hours and a reinstall I now can log on to my ROUTER from anywhere
I have no access to anything but my router. Good part is I can turn my server off and still access my router - save power
Seriously though I've set port forwarding, and setup a number so called users. Numerous reinstalls and NEW HDA settings etc and do not seem to be able to get past my router.
THere doesn't seem to be much info on router configerations etc but I asume you only need to forward the Port 1194 to the 192.168.1.10 as stated in the wiki.
Any ideas and help would be appreciated. I've been working on this configeration for 2 days and over 12 frustrating hours ( It only took me two hours to set up my VPS from scratch with centos 5! This should have been easier! )

The only settings that should be changed on the router is turning DCHP Server OFF and forwarding for 1194 to the ip selected for your hda during initial setup in the amahi.org control panel. (ie 192.168.1.? where default is 10).

Also what kind of router do you have and what is the IP address of the router in question?

Also make sure your using Fedora10 and not 11 (Fedora 11 is not yet supported, but is being worked on).

Is your HDA connected through eth0 on your motherboard or do you have a separate PCI ethernet card (Amahi only works with eth0 out of the box currently)

Ok, this is an interesting thread. However, it's really not exactly clear what you are trying to do.

Can you explain in more detail what you attempted to do?

We would like to support better in general what users want to do. However, we need to understand precisely what is it that the default configuration does not allow to make what you wanted.

Clearly setting up amahi should not take 12 hours! (Sorry to hear that)
Why did it take so long?
How can we improve the configuration or the documentation or ... ?

After setting up the system with Fedora 10 and Amahi - I try to access it via the link sent to me from yourhda.com and all I get is my router login screen. I can log into my router and even change settings but thats as far as I get!
I think basically this system won't do what I basically am trying to achieve.
I am basically trying to setup a home server that can be used for file storage, as well as a web development server, which can be accessible from home and work etc. That way I wouldn't have to cart around portable drives etc for my site development etc.
That way I can update files primarily from home where of course I'd have full speed and access direct to the machine, but then if needed I could also update from other places, or retrieve software , etc.
The box I've setup is connecting to the internet fine as I can browse from that machine, and the dashboard etc all seems to be working.
I've read now though that you need to run the VPN client which is unfortunately not compatable with windows 7 which may be the problem.
I should read the instructions before I jump into things. (The "Instructions" don't really say anything about routers, VPN clients required, etc but the WIKI has a good collection of info.)
I may need to rethink my setup! I'm about to reset and reconfigure the router and see if anything changes. Hopefully early day 3 will heed results

i think that is the basic purpose of the Amahi home server. however, i think you are expecting to access your files from the internet. the safe way of doing it is the VPN. yes the current client may not work well on windows 7 (there is someone testing it in compatibility mode), however, you can get the latest (OpenVPN 2.1_rc18 as of this writing) in the openvpn site, and configure it by hand, just like the mac and linux clients.

now, you can also use things like ajaxplorer to access your files from outside, as well as ssh. you have to open ports for this and even set it up to be accessed with https.

granted, some of these things are not "push button" easy yet, but we'll get there with your help and suggestions.

I reset the router again, turned off DHCP, reset port forwading etc and this time I got zero access.
I then checked and found that my isp had allocated a different ip address when the router rebooted. (Its meant to be a fixed ip!)
Anyway, I created a new HDA thingy and it wants me to reinstall but I tried it again anyway without reinstalling, and I can now log into my router again!
Back to the drawing board!
Later this morning I'll reinstall (again) and start from scratch.
Amahi looks like the sort of thing that would be handy but maybe I'm expecting too much.
I tried the openVPN client but that too has issues with Windows 7.

to be honest, i am not sure what you expect in this exercise. this has nothing to do with amahi and reinstalling will not help, i think, since there is some issue with forwarding in your router?

important - you cannot VPN into your network from within it. it will confuse the hell out of the client - will try to route to itself and rip a hole in the time-space continuum.

since this forum is not working well, try to just stop by the irc channel and the community will help you get what you want done.

Finally got it to work.
Had to reinstall F10 with no updates, etc. no other repositories but Amahi.
Install it and fix IP address to 192.168.1.10 and then reserve the ip in the router. LEAVE DHCP ON on the router. And then I can access it via local network via 192.168.1.10 address and the rest of the network is happy then. Forward the port to the address and also forward port 80 to allow http access as well.
Access via VPN sort of works - (not from same network but via business Wireless ADSL on the laptop) but there is definate problems with Windows 7RC access through VPN. If all goes well I'm going to put Knoppix on the laptop anyway.
I'll setup a simple website for access and use that for external access, then hopefully I can access it from any computer. Which is what started this whole excercise.
Now its running it seems to work okay. Time to test !
