Problem: Usb external hard drive mounting in the system at every reboot with a different name. This is causing all my shares to fail. Example /media/IOMEGA HDD after reboot it changes to /media/IOMEGA HDD_ then after another reboot it changes to /media/IOMEGA HDD__ it just keeps adding a _ after every reboot.
Solution as i can see it: manually unmount it after every reboot and manually name it.
I recently changed the format on my external hard drive from ntfs to ext4. I then used ubuntu to format drive and then to mount it.
I would really like to know how to manually mount a drive and assign the name to that drive so i can do it after every reboot. Unless someone has a better idea.
Thanks Simon

Re: Sytem Mounting My usb hard drive with wrong name
Well I am running Ubuntu 12.04 desktop so it auto mounts the usb drive. So the info for adding USB sticks is out.
But like i said after a reboot it changes the name of the mount point. by adding a _ to the end of it. It is easy to unmount the drive but to remount the drive with a certain name is what i am after. I know you posted some information about fedora but i am sure that does not apply to ubuntu 12.04.
Thank you for the reply I appreciate any of the information posted as I am trying to research each one.

Recommend you check Google. There are lots of tutorials about adding a USB hard drive to mount permanently in Ubuntu out there.

Re: Sytem Mounting My usb hard drive with wrong name
Hi I found out how to fix this problem.
I was listed in multiple forums but i was unaware of how Linux reads the drive information.
1: I was unaware that each drive is mounted with a name that is listed as a file folder under media
2: If this file name is taken then it will add another and put a _ behind it
3: Even if you delete the file folder and mount the drive with that file name the server still might create a file folder in the background under the one you think you mounted under and put the files into a hidden directory on a different hard drive.
4: solution is not really simple but can be done. took me 2 days of reading but here it is.
You have to copy any files you wish to save to a separate drive
Format the drive you wish to have access to with linux ( i formatted mine with ext4)(oh and make sure you format the drive under the username you are using on the server or it will not give you write access)
Next you have to copy all the info from your backup over to this drive.
now comes the tricky part and thats altering your fstab to give you permanent mounting point. ( this i looked up on the ubuntu 12.04 support for changing the fstab)
After you have altered the Fstab then you must delete the old mount point in the media directory
Now turn off your computer
then plug in the usb drive and turn on the computer.
that should give you access with a permanent mount point that will not change after every reboot. It has been working for a couple weeks now and I am still monitoring it.
