N00b MySQL Server Database Question

Postby leis » Fri Jul 13, 2012 9:13 pm

So I'm running Amahi on Fedora 14 and I like it, thanks for all your hard work.

I also do some database programming in MySQL and I'd like to use my home server as a testbed for a PHP/MySQL database. Since everyone who has Amahi knows what my MySQL root password it is, it seems dangerous to expose port 3306 to the internet. Is there a way around this? Should I just run the test MySQL server on some other box with a more secure root password? Forward 3306 to a different machine?

You can change the port when you forward it outside the network with most routers. You should be able to change the password using phpMyAdmin or Adminer.

Thanks for the response, Bigfoot.

Yes I know I can forward the port, but I was asking if it was safe to use the fedora box for other mySQL databases when the root password for mySQL can't be changed because of Amahi.

If I want to run a web accessible database, do I need to do it on a different machine than my Amahi box?

You can add databases to the Amahi database if you choose. The data base root password should be changeable. It was on Fedora 14 at one time anyway. Most apps use their own database password so it should not break anything.

We have a separate user and password for the internal Amahi connections. I hope that helps.
