admin refusing sign in details Help plz.

For some unknown reason I can no longer sign in as admin
at a terminal attached to hda

I can sign in as root and as my user account.... but admin refuses
login details...

Can I resolve the problem or is it possible to access the file holding
the login details via Root account...

I hate the thought of a total re-install but if necessary So Be It
This is after all simply a test to setup a user friendly cost effective
