Looking for a good home server, found Amahi.

Postby hobino » Sun Sep 25, 2011 6:45 pm

Hello all,

I am currently using Windows Home Server for all my backups, mostly full backups of my PCs in case one of them crash, I can easily restore it. I recently got a Mac, with Os X Lion installed on it. So, I thought of buying the 2011 version of WHS, but seems they removed some features and that it is not yet fully compatible with Os X Lion. I Google search for a free home server and I found many options, including Ubuntu Server, FreeNAS and this one, Amahi. I looked around the website, read the FAQ, the Wiki and the installation guide. I have a good idea of how it works, but still have some questions for this great community! :D

- Is it possible to do full system backup for Windows 7, Mac Os X Lion and Linux?

- Is disk pooling with Greyhole safe? (I have read that it is still been tested?)

So, right now I am downloading Fedora 14, which from what I read is the Os I need for Amahi. I will use Amahi as a home server, to do full backups of all my systems and after been able to restore them easily in case of crash. I will only open my server when I need to do a backup, then closing it again. So, in general, does Amahi as everything a needed for a simple home server?

That is all for now, my questions may sound silly, but I just want to be sure of what I am doing before actually doing it.

Thank you! :D

EDIT: Any tips, guides, links or help is welcome!

Hello,

Best avenue for FULL system backup of clients is to use Clonezilla Live CD. There is a guide in the wiki that explains how to do it to your HDA.

As for Greyhole, I use it and have no problems. If it was not safe, we would not include it with Amahi.

Amahi can do many things as you can see from checking out the web site. If you need any help, holler here in the forums or visit the IRC #amahi channel for live assistance.
