I'm looking at building an Amahi server. I currently have two external NAS boxes, a ReadyNAS NV+ and a QNAP 419P+
How easy is it for the Amahi server to take over the management (mainly permissioning I guess, drive mapping whatever) of these two NAS boxes. In my ideal world, the HDA will adopt these boxes as external disks seamlessly and I will be able to control access, backup etc etc from the HDA.
Is this possible ? I know the NAS boxes run linux at their core but are able to use a Windows AD for permissioning. Does that all sit together nicely ?
I will have 3 or 4 windows PCs as clients, 3 media streamers (PopcornHour and HDI) which I want to connect via SMB or NFS, a PS3, XBOX 360, Denon Amp, Samsung TV & Blueray, all which will need DNLA. My aim is that all of these clients can access both NAS boxes but having their access controlled by the HDA.
Down the track when I am more comfortable with Amahi I'll look to build a RAID into the server itself, but until then this seems like the easiest solution for me.
Is it possible ?
Amahi with ReadytNAS & QNAP NAS boxes
Re: Amahi with ReadytNAS & QNAP NAS boxes
I dont think the Amahi box will be able to administer those NAS box.
Question?
Whats wrong with those NAS boxes? Especially the QNAP 419P+
I ask because I was very very close of buying QNAP 239+ about 7 months. It appeared to be everything I wanted.
But at the last minute I decided to using the funds to buy new hardware and give amahi a shot. (Im glad i did, amahi has been solid)

Re: Amahi with ReadytNAS & QNAP NAS boxes
Nothing wrong with it per se, if all I wanted was a dedicated NAS. I've been pushing it as a torrent and sabnzbd, sickbeard server which is straining the poor little thing. I've decided it makes sense to have a home server where I can centrally manage everything and run the 24x7 scripts I need. Plus I'd like better control over my home network.
Re: Amahi with ReadytNAS & QNAP NAS boxes
Really? all those services and you are straining it. Interesting. I wondered if it would, but I assumed the QNAP would be optimized so it wouldn't. So i'm glad I never went that route then.
I have all those services, plus more i believe running on my HDA, and she is just purring away.
Devices in our house are...
1 x Netgear Router 3500L running tomato firmware (which is 100% solid, i prefer it over ddwrt)
1 x Amahi Server
2 x Desktops (wired)
1 x Netbook (wireless)
2 x Xbox360 (wired)
1 x ipod (wireless)
2 x Android phones (wireless)

Re: Amahi with ReadytNAS & QNAP NAS boxes
Yeah, straining it enough that the dl speeds of sabnzbd are slow and when unpacking a file I need to stop the download.
It's a handy little box but it won't replace a server.
