Printer Maintenance Tool

Hey!

First of all: Amahi is a real great project! Got it running now for a few days and it works like a charm and is as easy as it could be to administrate. I was impressed, when I connected my printer to the homeserver and after a couple of seconds it showed up in my smb browser and worked out of the box.

One thing that I am missing is some kind of printer maintenance tool. Since I have an inkjet that is not able to display, which cartridge is empty, it would be very useful to have some kind of inklevel monitor. For now I am using "mtink" via ssh X-forwarding to my linux netbook. http://xwtools.automatix.de/

As I could see, they have some other useful linux printing tools (also a server, that can display inklevels in a browser). Too bad it is just for Epson printers. Maybe you could get in touch with them and find out, if something similar for more (maybe all?) printer brands would be possible?!

Thanks for now and keep up the good work!

well, there is cups web interface - http://hda:631

i don't *think* that has ink levels and other printer-specific status.

what i do for that is i installed the printer specific tools (hp in my case), which are desktop tools. since i have a VNC server running in my HDA. in it i can see the ink levels. i also configured multiple queues for the printer.

ps: thanks for the kind words!

cpg running xorg on a server is kind of something that one may want to avoid...
it WOULD be really nice to see if there are commandline tools or cubs plugins for stuff like that though...

if there is some kind of 'webtool' for this, i would depreciate the graficall x-tools right on the spot...

somebody should probably go look some time... - but it shouldn't be one of the devs
(you guys allready have way to mutch work ahead)....

@ mugel0190 - maybe you would like to try and find sutch tools or any releated info you can find on google and other resources and post some links in this tread (if they exist) -
any sugestions may be worth something so you might want to post 'm all (well at least those that seamed to have gotten an answer, ) ...

this would in the end help anyone interested in creating an amahi tool ... IF its possible ofcaurse....

Yeah, I can't connect to the printer from my Win& x64 box either. Also, the CUPS solution doesn't work, as there appears to be no CUPS server at port 631.

:x

I have now been able to access CUPS on the server with http://localhost:631, and the problem with sharing the printer now seems obvious: the current setup shows the printer not to be shared.

I tried changing this so that it was shared, but I get an Eroor: Forbidden notice.

How can I share a printer on the Amahi Home Server with my windows clients? I have worked through all the solutions currently posted, none  of them work.

This is documented in the wiki. Take a look at http://wiki.amahi.org/index.php/Adding_ ... ed_printer.

If this still does not work, please come by the IRC channel or post results here. I will be glad to help you get it working.
