My vote, second to building Amahi on Ubuntu would be to have better support for Mac's and the first feature on that list would be for Netatalk to be included for support of Apple Filing Protocol.

We have attempted to package AFP ... however, it did not quite work out of the box
(in fact it made my mac os x networking somewhat confused).

Would you know how to package it?

The person who packaged it originally did not follow through and the app is still in alpha.
It may work for you (it seemed to work for him), however, we need it to work for more people...

I wish I had the slightest idea of how to package up Netatalk. I did get it running some time ago on Ubuntu 8.04 but it took a bit of messing around to get it going. It would also crash my MacBook Pro on occasion however I believe there is a newer version since my endeavor that may be more stable. Perhaps Snow Leopard would be more stable with Netatalk these days (have not tried it since). There are a bunch of new NAS drives being sold with afp support so one has to wonder if their products are not using Netatalk with fixes.

I think Lacie network drives can also serve AFP shares. They also state that their source is open and you can download it. Perhaps there are some pointers to be found there?

This is a great point! I am not aware of any open source package other than Netatalk capable of providing afp shares.

i know this topic is kinda old but i have afp running on my hda
using (net)atalk and avahi my servers are automatically found by time machine

if i knew how to package it i would do it but cant find much info on how to

if anybody is intrested i can post how to make it work...

Im having no problem with the current setup documented http://wiki.amahi.org/index.php/Backups ... me_Machine even with more than 2TB data in my timemachine..
SSL security is enabled thru uams_dhx2.so and uams_dhx.so in afpd.conf

i allready added it at the backups with timemachine i will replace and link to it

I have followed your AFP tutorial and have that working properly. The issue I have is with the Time Machine stuff. When you talk about creating the sparsebundle, I am getting lost. In the text you say to create a sparse bundle, but in the screen shot, from what I can get from Google Translator, is that it is a read/write disk image.

Can you go over all the settings used in creating the disk image to be put on the TimeMachine AFP share?
