FOG server
FOG server
I've never used FOG but I've heard great things about it. Now that I'm preparing to setup an HDA for a very small private school I'm wondering about using FOG on the HDA given that space and $ don't allow for multiple servers. Anyone done this or does anyone have any thoughts for or against it?
Re: FOG server
It was mentioned that some people may not know what FOG is. A FOG server is a cloning solution similar to Ghost. Images can be stored than cloned over the network making imaging much easier as you add machines. Here is a link to the project, http://www.fogproject.org/.
Re: FOG server
Ah, ok.
Did you know that PBA does that?
It's showing it's age, so we were considering scraping it for clonezilla. Looks like FOG is another option in that space!
Also, by moving to PXEKnife, we can have them all simultaneously and more (antivirus, OS boot disks, nettop booting ...).
We're shorthanded to make all that possible, tho, so roll up your sleeves

My HDA: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3570K CPU @ 3.40GHz on MSI board, 8GB RAM, 1TBx2+3TBx1
Re: FOG server
No I didn't realize that. I thought the PBA was just for backups so I hadn't really looked into it. I will either use that or I might try FOG. Thanks.
Re: FOG server
PBA does the cloning thing and backs it up to your hda, all you have to do is run the cd again to restore it, just select restore instead of backup.
It makes a *bare metal backup* so to speak, as it clones your hard drive into an image. Just like FOG.
Hope this helps.

Re: FOG server
just to chime in: it works perfectly (for me at least).
I've done several backups/restores.
I've also had a workstation disk crash on me, so I bought a new HDD (slightly larger than the previous) and did a restore... it did throw a message about the disk not being the same size but it copied the image and it booted without issues (image was windows/linux partitions)
