Amahi as a gateway

Postby rgmhtt » Tue Mar 17, 2009 6:38 am

I have thought a lot about this and vote: NO!!! It would be EVIL.

No way do we want a NAS server to also be a gateway, I know they sell them, but the security issues are mammoth.

No one should be running PPP over eth0 for Internet access and having all their other systems off of eth1. Today, firewall/gateways are just too cheap (though I do remember paying $500 for my first one). If you want to build your own firewall/gateway, use one of the other projects and at worst run Amahi as a VM on the system.

We SHOULD consider running HTTP as a proxy with authentication, to help control Internet access. The firewall would be configured to only allow the Amahi system out over HTTP; I did set up Shorewall for 'routeback'. Though there are apps, like Turbo Tax that just don't like authenticating HTTP proxies.

Finally there COULD be systems in your home that don't need Internet access, but need Amahi services (when we get to OpenPBX), so a limited use might be in the plans....

My nickel worth (we live in a time of deflation!).
