webmin and ajaxterm 'special' characters

Postby koffie » Sun Dec 20, 2009 2:20 am

Hi

I have a problem I don't know how to fix. I use Webmin's File Manager and Ajaxterm for moving/copying files and directories from download directories to other locations. I run into problems whit file names with é è ç ñ etc. The copy operation is aborted, they will just not copy. I have to go to the amahi machine itself to copy these files, and then they copy fine.

I have googled the internet but I just am not savvy enough to understand the lingo on UTF-8 bla. Could someone please explain in simple terms what to do? My skill level: running Ubuntu for 3 years, and yes, I know what a shell is, too. Running AMAHI for 1 month now. AMAHI v5/F12 currently.

I'd also like to run midnight commander in Ajaxterm. Now I'm getting a visual mess on Ajaxterm when I run it although it seems to function just fine. It's more a question of character sets again. (I'm just not that fast with the linux commands and the command line. I'm more of a visual person ;) )

Any help much appreciated. I find these two programs (the) most useful apps to manage the server and I use them a lot.

first, webmin is a dangerous app, it can ruin your HDA settings, in particular Amahi's settings, so be careful with shares, user and virtual hosts.

second, about the accented/special chars, i don't know much about why they would fail. why not use putty (if you are on windows) or iTerm on the mac? on Linux you have the gnome-terminal, kterm, etc. where midnight commander should work well!

some of our european users that frequent this board may be able to help.

For moving files between clients and your HDA, the best application to use is WinSCP. It works quite well and there is a portable version for Windows available at http://portableapps.com/apps/internet/winscp_portable.

thanks bigfoot and cpg,

I am well aware that I can mess up my system in seconds with webmin. I don't touch what I don't understand! As for the copying, I was referring to copying files between shares on the hda itself, not to/from the hda. That means they already have the names with these special characters on the hda, and I just want to copy them to another location on the hda.

I'll try putty or the gnome terminal. Thanks. But i'd still like to know if anyone has a solution to my original question.
regards
