How will Amahi effect my DD-WRT router?

Postby bpartin2009 » Mon Mar 27, 2017 3:13 pm

I am new to this and a little naive to how Amahi works as a DCHP server, but I currently have this setup.

Local ISP =====> 1st Router (SBG6580) ====>HardWired==> 2nd Wireless Router (Linksys WRT1900AC) w/ DD-WRT firmware ====>Home PC/TV/Phones/Amazon Firestick

Local ISP 24.90.xxx.xxx ====> 1st Router (192.168.0.1) =======> (192.168.0.24) 2nd Router (192.168.1.1) ======>192.168.xxxx.xxx

* 1st Router has DMZ on
* 1st Router has 2nd Router IP address set to static.
* 1st Router has port forwarding rules to 2nd Router

* 2nd Router has USB 2TB NAS attached
* 2nd Router has OpenVPN client configured to use IPVANISH (covering all devices automatically)
* 2nd Router serves up NAS data using Samba3
* 2nd Router runs miniDLNA

I am proposing hard wiring my Amahi Server to the 2nd router and letting Amahi handle DCHP and DNS and using the Amahi server's storage as additional NAS and serving capabilities.

My general question is, does my 2nd router stay as 192.168.1.1 and DCHP/DNS forwarding to (hypothetically) a static Amahi 192.168.2.1, which will assign all IP's and reach BACK through the 2nd router for serving?

Also, is the OpenVPN in Amahi local to the Amahi server or configuring an OpenVPN connection on the connected router (thus messing up my current IPVANISH setup)? Meaning 192.168.1.1:1443 or 192.168.2.1:1443
And if the OpenVPN connection is made to the Amahi server on the farthest put of my network from the ISP , how will it be effected but my IPVANISH on my 2nd router always being on?

Thanks,
Brad

OK, So I suppose I can keep my IPvanish on my router and use TCP port 443 and just port forward UDP port 1194 to the HDA for its services.

I am assuming it MIGHT work, maybe, depending on how the Dynamic DNS service you provide handles my internet connection being proxy'd through an IPvanish server.

Still looking into how the DCHP/DNS serving will change things.

I did not quite follow everything, which stopped me from replying the first time, and then got sidetracked.

Basically, an Amahi HDA will serve one network, typically a C-class network (256 addresses, 192.*). Simple.

How you arrange the rest is up to you. My router is DD-WRT and it's not affected by it at all. I don't know well what IPvanish does, but you don't have to use our dynamic DNS service, since it's totally external to your network and cannot do anything to it.
My HDA: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3570K CPU @ 3.40GHz on MSI board, 8GB RAM, 1TBx2+3TBx1
