Wanting new case

Postby modem7 » Thu Aug 07, 2014 2:50 pm

Hey guys,

I'm kinda itching to get a new server, won't happen for a little while, so specs are kinda irrelevant atm.

What I *am* looking for however, is storage, specifically a case that is as small as possible, yet holds many drives.

Currently I have an HP N40L with 6 hard drives (2 in the optical bay). I'm looking for something that can store around 8-10 hard drives (including doubling up the ODD bay).

What would you guys recommend? I've been looking at the LIAN LI PC-Q25B which seems to fit the bill, just worried about the PSU space

Thanks!

Alex

I built a new headless server and went for the Bitfenix Phenom M
Build quality is great and you can fit 4 drives in there, i went for a case that looks good and performs also.

Why so many drives ? - Technology is getting larger and faster yet more compact.. you could upgrade the HDD size and use less drives and less power. :)

Good question.

My answer is basically this: Money.

Basically I already have 11Tb available to me.

3x 1Tb
1x 2Tb
2x 3Tb

I also have another 1x 3Tb disk and a 1Tb disk available to me at home.

First: Why don't I use the extra 3Tb disk I have available to me?
I kinda cocked up Greyhole, so need to redo the whole thing (need to upgrade Amahi, so waiting for that before I redo things)

Second: No point buying extra disks when I have sufficient ones lying around.

Currently I have 3Tb free of the 11Tb, but that is with careful space management.

My critical files (which is set to max in greyhole) comes to around 200gb (so in this case, as I have 6 HDD's we're talking 1.2Tb of replication). The rest are non-critical files that are nice to have (Movies, Anime, TV shows etc) that are set to 1 in greyhole (so one redundant copy).

So the ability to have more physical hard drives certainly appeals to me, especially since it's easier and cheaper to use hard drives I either have lying around, or cheap second hand low capacity drives (2tb etc).

I had to build another home server recently and went with

http://www.nzxt.com/product/detail/105-source-210-case
NZXT Source 210
and added a

http://www.xigmatek.com/product.php?productid=97
(4 in 3 cage)

...totaling 12 available HDD trays.

I will eventually have a drive in every tray.

Ah unfortunately that case is just too large for what I need it for. That's why I went for the smaller M-ITX case.

Otherwise I'd just re-use my Lian Li A71-B and have a buttload of storage options.
