Fedora 14 vs. Ubunto 12.04

Postby Falkens » Fri Sep 28, 2012 12:08 am

Hello and thanks for a great server (i think!),

Yes, new to it but very interested in Amahi because of the app-feature. I'm a little curious as to which system to go on? Do you all recommend Fedora 14 or does it work with Ubunto 12.04. I think or look at the apps and most of the apps so is Fedora 14 that seems to work great, it is green or at least is yellow while the majority of Ubunto 12.04 are red.

My opinion is that Fedora 14 is recommended or is Ubunto up going so I might as well go with Ubunto OR should I change to Feodora 14 before I starts?

The official Amahi version is Ubuntu 12.04.1. We no longer support Fedora 14 other than maintenance if needed.

All new app releases will be Ubuntu only. It would be wise to stay with Ubuntu.

Good choice. Plus with it being Long Term Support, updates to the OS and Amahi will continue for years.

We will be rolling out Fedora 17/18 later this year. It's in development now, but no estimated release date as of yet.

OMFG I skim read this and came to the conclusion that Fedora was being depreciated and you were only developing apps for the Ubuntu platform going forward. It is and was a massive relief to read more closely and see a Fedora 17/18 version was in development.

I took Ubuntu out for a spin recently and was dismayed to discover it ran like a pig on my hardware. Worse still was the Linux Software RAID which was impossible to control properly and would take hours to repair and remount after reboots. Disk activity went through the roof and all the lights on the front of my server were red and flashing full time (heh  ) So, I rolled back to Fedora 14 after having used a 12 base for so long and I am happy to report it's as rock solid and maintenance free as ever. And the first time it booted I was able to start and mount the RAID array WITHOUT A REPAIR that took 9 hours (no literally).

I love Fedora. I like the Ubuntu platform as much as I like Unity (not even a little). Thank you, thank you. Amahi is excellent.

Yes, Fedora will not be abandoned as an OS for Amahi. With Fedora 17/18 Amahi version comes 7.0 which will add new features.

My only issue with Fedora is the short support timeframe. That is my reason for supporting Ubuntu LTS.

It's too bad Amahi could not be built on top on of CentOS 6 instead of Fedora

True. We have tried CentOS, but there are too many quirks with it that Amahi did not work well.

Thats odd. Fedora is just bleeding edge version Redhat/CentOS.

Wouldn't it be beneficial for Amahi to make it work with CentOS, mainly for the longer life cycle.

Don't know what the issues were. Hard to say if that will be considered.
