Folder sync in LAN

Hi All,

I have been using Amahi without any major issues for over a year now. However, there are few things that I would like to achieve for my day to day use. One of them being "Folder Sync between computers in LAN". Here is my case:

1. I have multiple computers running Ubuntu at home
2. HDA running with lots of storage (6TB for now.. still one bay empty.. show off :O)
3. I am photo freek, use my camera to take RAW+JPEGs which are 20 to 30mb each
4. I move the photos that I would like to post process to a specific folder on HDA
5. I use various tools to post process the pictures on all PCs
6. At times, accessing these files over wifi is a pain in the "you know where"

So an Ideal scenario is making my folder on the server like a dropbox / git(not first choice as the versions makes it heavy) folder, which will sync on both ways from every pc when I edit a photo.

I am not looking for out of LAN sync at the moment.. internally would be good..

Tried to install Sparkleshare + git(on hda).. for some reason it did not work.. please help.. how can I create a user without password.. ?

How about something like Amahi Sync?

http://www.amahi.org/apps/amahi-sync

There is also some guidance in the wiki on adding Dropbox service to the HDA.

http://wiki.amahi.org/index.php/DropBox

Hope this helps.

Hi Bigfoot.. I would have consiered Amahi Sync/DropBox/Google Docs.. however they are not suitable for this specific reason, because the folder I am talking about is in the tune of 8GB... and as I said, each file is about 30MB, so upload times are an issue too there..

HOWEVER...

I have finally managed to successfully install GIT server and Sparkleshare client on my pc with successfull sync.. and I am gonna live with it for now until I get a full solution...

PS: I have tried sparkleshare from outside LAN, even that worked, however I wont be using it a lot, cos of huge size of my files mentioned earlier...

Thanks a lot for your help...

Understand. Amahi Sync and Dropbox can handle 8GB easily. The upload time is pretty good in my opinion.

Hi Bigfoot65, I mean the upload times of my Home Internet connection are really bad.. not at the servers. :)

Thanks

Understand. Just wanted to advise on what is available. There are so many third party tools for Windows clients as well. I am using sync/backup tool called Create Synchronicity which works well for me.

http://synchronicity.sourceforge.net/

I have it set to backup nightly to the HDA and an external hard drive. It is by far the best solution I have found so far for file/directory sync/backup.

I really should come here more often!

Unison works perfectly for LAN synchronisation. My set up is:
Amahi on Fedora14 <-> WD MyBook World Edition with Debian Squeeze replacing the stock OS

I had to compile Unison for Debian, but once I did that, unison keeps all of my media in sync, synchronisation happening within minutes of a change being made on either machine.
