smartctl might not be installed (should be by default, but nothing a "yum install smartct"l can't fix)
yes, the name of the file (it's the bottom line that's displayed) is OK. this is just a temporary file that's created and it will write out to the correct file.
I think the default editor is "vi"... some basic things:
type i for insert mode, Esc to exit insert mode. in insert mode you can type your stuff.
type w to save the file, q to quit.
if you edit a file but don't want to save your changes you can type q! (force quit without saving).
good luck

Re: Status:not updating
Well, I just froze again but this time I was able to see that it was a kernal error.I manged to take a screen shot of the message and copied the details of the error, but I can't get back in to look at it or attach it to this post, because my machine reboots to this error:
CRC Error
Kernal panic - not syncing: VFS: unable to mount root fs on unkown-block (0,0) and goes no further.
Any ideas on what to try? I'll report back later, I'm on someone else computer for now.

this looks like the disk went south, either hardware, or it got corrupted
My HDA: Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3570K CPU @ 3.40GHz on MSI board, 8GB RAM, 1TBx2+3TBx1
Re: Status:not updating
ok, on the third re-boot it, loaded and I am back. During boot up the following errors occurred though:
Local File system: failed
other file systems: failed
everything else went ok.
I googled the kernel panic error message and a lot of stuff came up, will need some time to digest what is being said, but it sounds more like a corruption than a disk failure (lets hope : ) )
I have attached a screenshot and the error details, hopefully someone can tell me what it all means.
Now, this leads my to ask, maybe it time to upgrade to F10 or F11. I could be a test box for the dev team and maybe it will magically fix my problem. what do the devs think?

Re: Status:not updating
I updated to f10 over the weekend and things look good. The error messages I was getting during boot up are gone.

Re: Status:not updating
Well, I started to have the same problems as I was having with F9. It turns out that my motherboard is faulty and will need to be replaced. I found out that other people with the same board were having problem. So I'm dead in the water until I get it replaced. Does anybody have a recommendation for a server motherboard at a reasonable price?

Re: Status:not updating
bummer.
if you really mean a "server class" motherboard, i have usually gone with asus in the past. tyan is the other good one for server class motherboards.
"server" motherboards usually deliver more I/O bandwidth and also may require server class features in the memory (ECC - error correction, and buffered ram in higher-end ones), and of course, they have multiple cpu sockets.
for more workstation class motherboards, which are not as expensive and more mainstream, i like gigabyte.
the best thing you can do for performance is probably get the highest speed RAM that your processor supports.

Re: Status:not updating
yup, if you really want server-class I recommend Tyan without second thoughts, though they're pricey.
Intel also manufactures great pro-workstation/server-class mainboards, for instance the S3200SH - it also supports non-pro CPU's, namely Core2Duo & Core2Quad but expect them to be quite pricey too but it can save you if you already have the CPU & supported memory

Re: Status:not updating
Thanks guys. Done with Gigabyte, the last two caused me problems. I have an Asus in my HTPC, and it great, but the intel intrigues me, especially since I can use the cpu/ram I have and it is a server class to boot. Maybe by the time I get back and running Ubuntu will be ready to test : ) Thanks again
