Why does the server need to call home?

It makes me nervous, when an operating system needs to call home, especially a open source. What is going on?

Thanks for this post... I've grown tired of waiting for FreeNAS8 and OVM to release something usable, I only became aware of Amahi last week.

For something as polished as Amahi, I've been questioning it's backing... Still have some research to do before trusting it and putting it to work, but the more I see the more I like parts of it. Somethings, like per-user access for shares, are brilliantly handled through the WebUI.

yeah, most home users should be using amahi rather than a dedicated nas. they'd get more out of it.
