Discussion Thread: AmazonAWS/Amahi for Office and Home use

Postby nuclear216 » Tue Nov 16, 2010 5:07 pm

I registered and tried the Amazon AWS free service.

It could make for a great platform for Amahi, basically one has this control panel where one can launch instances (=virtual machine) based on AMI, an AMI it's an image of a system, many are available on amazon cloud already (public and official releases) and one could make one (also check this) using amazon tools, basically one makes an empty file, put a filesystem there and upload it to the amazon servers where it would be available to start an instance.

The only official AMI available for fedora are fedora core 8 releases, there are public ami of other versions, I used one of fedora 12 x86_64 (public=unknown source) that was labelled as a "fresh fedora 12 install", ssh into it, made a user account, installed amahi's rpm, started the installer and amahi dashboard was there, so basic system work but there were a few problem.
The first thing I checked was how DHCP impacted on the network and it really didn't, after reboot the dashboard was perfectly reachable and I disabled DHCP server and Samba server.

The question really is wheter those problem that ultimately seems to have made it unusable were related to the fact that some thing are configured during ISO install process or if the guy who made the image screwed something up, I have written this procedure in the wiki for reference only (they basically don't work) here,i also added a quick guide to doing the ssh tunnel, the reason why I stumbled upon Amazon AWS, that might be better placed somewhere else.
Anyway those are the error I saw during install process

hda-platform-5.6-8.noarch.rpm install noted there was no apache account, so it used root account instead, noticeably I did all this via a root ssh terminal.

rubygems ruby-libs ruby-mysql install noticed a dependacies error and again that there was no apache account so root was used instead.

another problem I noticed while configuring user ssh access whas that permission on /dev/null where messed up, I had to set chmod go+rw it.

apart from that everything looked fine, but as I tried to install apps everything hangs up, this is the amahi app install log:

More importantly this is the log from the system as provided in the amazon console:

This look very messy so I think that the best thing would be for someone to go thru the complicated process of making a clean AMI of a running Amahi install, "bundle" (amazon terminology) it to the server so that everyone could use it as the Amahi AWS release, it would be "simple" as that because everyone using that AMI would use exactly the same system, this is the beauty of virtualization.

I personally don't have very much use for Amahi in particular on this kind of plattform, but I see why and how this could be extrememly useful to someone else and it might be really worth looking into from the Amahi perspective, what comes to my mind in particular is the Small Office setup, an office collaboration tool, simple or complicated as one could imagine it, could really rely on the use of amazon server in conjunction with amahi simple approach and possibilities, It might even be that some amazon guy could be interested in sponsorship of amahi project or some sort or collaboration, depending on their marketing views this could be a way for them to tap into some new market and for amahi to grow and take advantage, but this is not really up to me, i'm just throwing a stone here.

There is another set of problem related to AWS free profile usage, which calls for discussion, basically 15/15 GB traffic per month is not much but buying some more it's not so costy, for one year server time and basic storage is free, in some situation people might want to buy some more at amazon price (cheap from some perspective, high from others, see for yourself).

I think that this is enough for now to start a discussion and see if the Amahi community is really interested in this.

Is that AMI instance free? Or is it just the basic Amazon one that is?
