I would recommend regular updates. I typically check daily and update accordingly. It is a matter of personal preference, but I feel it is important to have the latest. This is most critical for security patches released.

You can create a cron job that does daily checks & updates. If you only want security updates I recommend installing the yum security plugin:
yum install yum-security
after that you can schedule a cronjob for the security updates only or update by hand:
yum -y update --security

another great tip moredruid!

maybe should be added to a quick tips & tricks forum which is strictly edited format?

eg.

cronjob - apply security updates
cronjob - apply all updates
system - how to shutdown, reboot
files - how to create, delete & edit etc

yada yada
