WOW - great testimonial and details! And what a rig!

Postby cpg » Thu Jul 29, 2010 1:09 pm

I thought I'd post this great testimonial we received, as it's got a lot of detail and not all of it fit in the testimonials page!

I was looking for a replacement for Windows Home Server, which I found to be a bit problematic to set-up and get going with. My home server forms the backbone of my network and as I am a freelance cameraman, video editor and photographer, I make high demands on reliability, usability and performance. WHS never cut it for me and the existing Drobo, which I have connected via Firewire 800 to my Mac, may have served me well for the past year but its performance is shockingly lacking!

Enter the Amahi Home Server – a free, Open Source alternative to WHS.

The Amahi team have pooled the best of what the Open Source Software community has to offer and wrapped it up in an easy to install, configure and maintain package. I don’t know why it is available freely as no doubt a lot of time has been invested developing it. It puts other paid efforts to shame in my opinion.

The cornerstone of Amahi Home Server for me is the sleek integration of Greyhole, which is the Open Source counterpart to Microsoft’s WHS Folder Duplication. Instead of RAID it forms a very fast, reliable and more over efficient way to keep your data save by copying it (mirroring) across available hard drives, which can be of any size and flavour (i.e. USB mixed with internal SATA drives can form a pool).

I now have a DHCP, VPN, (redundant) file server, IRC proxy, UPNP media server, and bit torrent client all in one easy to manage package.

Thank you to the Amahi team for providing a well supported, documented and developed solution.

My set-up: Asus P5B-Plus motherboard with Intel Core2Duo CPU, 4GB DDR2 RAM, 4x 1.5TB Samsung F3 hard drives (storage pool), 2x 250GB Samsung SpinPoint hard drives (RAID1; operating system)

A further 4x 1TB hard drives will be moved from the Drobo to the new server soon.

Well thank you :D

Recorded a little video today also. Got a bit long (~17min!) what with all the "touring my set-up" but got some nice performance out of the system. Probably going to do another set of benchmarks once I've tested some more and finalised the set-up and added a proper scratch disk for greyhole.

After moving 72.8GB(!) of photos across... well, it was great to see Greyhole and Amahi simply processing away without fail! Nice :ugeek:

PS: wiredfutureman=Axel S. (also on IRC: #amahi, #greyhole)
My Amahi system: Core2Duo E4500 2.20Ghz, Asus P5B-Plus, 2x Samsung 250GB (s-RAID1), 3x 1.5TB Samsung, 4x Samsung 1TB, H/W RAID0 2x 80GB to be added soon (Samba shares / Greyhole scratch disk)
