well, that would not explain the corruption, i think, as there is always a bit in reserve for root.
root should not really have problems to write things like /etc/mtab.tmp!

you try removing a bunch of files to make some room and check the drive.

At least part of the problem was that the disk was full because I need to upgrade the storage on the server and the back up utility I am using had overfilled the disk.

I just removed booted the machine to level 3 and then deleted a backup or two.

Now it loads and starts X no problem.

Haven't checked the disk for further problems.
