Hello, currently using WHS and was thinking of switching to Amahi but was wondering if it can do the following before I even consider to switch.
- Act as a DHCP server (which from reading the answer is yes)
- I have a router that does not have WiFi, so my WHS box acts as a WiFi access point as my WiFi adapter is bridged to my lan adapter/connection to provide internet access to WiFi clients. Can Amahi act as a access point in this manner or similar?
- Does Amahi have a utility to recover specific files in a backup set as oppose to a complete backup recovery.
- Does Amahi have an automated backup for OS to a separate drive/partition which WHS currently does not have.
- Can XBMC and the MCE remote work with Amahi as I use my WHS server as my media player too. I thought I read that XBMC will work with Amahi, not sure about the MCE remote.
- The ability to access your shares from the WAN as you can with WHS in case your are somewhere else.
- Is there a native or even 3rd party utility to monitor my APC UPS backup unit.
- I currently use Linux as my primary desktop OS, other machines in the home use Win7. Lan tranfser via smb from my linux box to WHS is slow. Unlike from my Win7 box to WHS where the same file transfers really quick. If I switch to amahi, will file transfers from my linux box to Amahi be faster since I'm not using smb anymore?
Thanks.
Can Amahi do the Following ??
Re: Can Amahi do the Following ??
- Act as a DHCP server (which from reading the answer is yes)
A: yes

A: not out of the box, you'll need to set it up yourself but it's possible
- Does Amahi have a utility to recover specific files in a backup set as oppose to a complete backup recovery.
A: depends on your method of backup
- Does Amahi have an automated backup for OS to a separate drive/partition which WHS currently does not have.
A: explain what you want: backup the OS from the Amahi box itself or backup another box to different partitions/drives
- Can XBMC and the MCE remote work with Amahi as I use my WHS server as my media player too. I thought I read that XBMC will work with Amahi, not sure about the MCE remote.
A: XBMC probably will work (dunno, someone else can tell you I guess), MCE: no experience with that
- The ability to access your shares from the WAN as you can with WHS in case your are somewhere else.
A: Amahi offers OpenVPN, you can use it to connect to your home network and access files, apps etc.
- Is there a native or even 3rd party utility to monitor my APC UPS backup unit.
A: yes, both community-written and by APC (PowerChute)

Unlike from my Win7 box to WHS where the same file transfers really quick. If I switch to amahi, will file transfers from my linux box to Amahi be faster since I'm not using smb anymore?
A: weird. My experience is quite the opposite (Gigabit network): XP transferred files at around 40MB/s; Win7 gets around 50 to 60MB/s; linux gets between 80 and 100MB/s; all from the same box (hardware).
You can choose to use a different network filesystem for linux (like NFS) but you'll have to set it up yourself (not that hard). You will use SMB as default.

Thanks for the reply...more below in bold...

I should have said using the native PBA tool(s) included. So when using one of Amahi's PBA tool(s) to backup your machine, can you recover individual files if needed

Interetsting, I have a GBit network at home as well. Let's say transferring a 1Gb mpeg file from Win7 to WHS I get transfer speeds of about 45MB/s. But from my MintLinux distro, I get about 5MB/s using smb.

A: the PBA tools don't work anymore, Crashplan & Clonezilla are currently being developed AFAIK. PBA didn't allow you to retrieve individual files.
Backup the OS from the Amahi box itself to another drive.
A: sure; you can use clonezilla, backuppc, amanda or plain old dd

A: wow that's bordering on silly... does WHS have an FTP feature? If so, what speeds do you get with FTP?
do you have another linux box or can you boot another system with a live CD and test network throughput from linux to linux?
