Fedora transition - voice your opinion!

I would also vote for ubuntu.

If I am going to put my digital life on Amahi, I would want it to be secure for a long time without doing any "active" maintenance. It seems that the best way to upgrade to a new Amahi version, is to do a reinstall of fedora. Doing this and at the same time keeping the data stored on amahi safe, makes it a somewhat daunting task for someone inexperienced with linux (like myself) to do an upgrade. I think most people want a server that just works, and having to do an upgrade of the underlying OS every 5 year insted of once a year would atleast be less work

Ubuntu LTS seems like the most logical choice since there just aren't the cycles available to support anything other OS based on their dev cycles (and CentOS/RHEL lags).

That said, I've found that its great to ellicit ideas from the peanut gallery on projects, but a poll seems like a bad idea. The devs here are the product champions and the poll should be for you guys. None of the rest of us have the whole picture of whats involved in any dev shift, and more importantly, we aren't invested like you guys are. You guys know best, so stick with your gut.

I don't know enough about Linux to have a solid opinion, but Fedora is a proven loser (because, no longer getting support -- that is a proven loss). It sounds (from other people's remarks), Ubuntu or CentOS, whichever hits the sweet spot of ease-of-transition and expected lifetime of support.

Just to clarify, we no longer have support from Fedora for version 14 in regards to security updates. They do support the newer versions, but Fedora 14 has been retired.

This is normal behavior as it is with Microsoft. They no longer offer updates to Windows XP or older versions.

Of course, Microsoft supported XP for nearly 12 years whereas Fedora 14 has only been supported for a little less than 2...My vote goes for Ubuntu LTS

i agree about the only real votes being with the dev team but i also think it is fair to ask for a distro with a long support cycle.

Ubuntu LTS seems to be a logical choice.

I personally don't have too much of an opinion on which OS you guys choose to use however I would suggest not fragmenting your user base by supporting multiple different options. Instead of supporting ubuntu/fedora/mint etc etc just support one thing and do it really really well. Make upgrading easy,make apps work, improve adding hard drives...stuff like that.

I have minimal Linux skills, so I'm just giving my opinion as an amateur user. I think there is a lot of momentum behind Ubuntu.

I played with the beta install using Ubuntu server and I liked having the minimal install option. I hope that whichever way it goes, there remains a non-desktop install option.

If we go primarily to Ubuntu, I hope the transition if settings is outlined. There will be a lot of users who won't wanna deal with any more hassle with the cross-grade and all.
