Came back from vacation and my HDA is flaking...

I don't know, that is strange. I am at a loss too. Maybe try booting to a Live CD and look around. Also check the /tmp directory and maybe remove some stuff from there.

update: smb IS working... but I think without amahi, there is a problem with the permissions... I can see the shares, I simply cannot access them.
Cpg... any ideas? what /var/log should I look at first?

Maybe look at boot.log, dmesg, and syslog for starters.

That is puzzling.
Take a look at your /var/log directory to see if you have some large log files you can delete. Take a look at /var/log/messages before you delete it to see if there are meaningful messages in there.
You may need to boot from a liveCD in order to fix things. It sounds like things are too hosed to do much at the moment. I suspect that once you clear out enough space, you might be able to reboot and get it running again.
I can't explain the 'out of space' while df shows room on your partitions. Are all your partitions shown on that list? Any of them missing?

Did this ever get solved? I am having the exact same problem. I have a ton of data that I cannot get to anymore. Any help would be great.

You're out of inodes. That means you have a lot of small files somewhere.
Use "df -i" to monitor inodes usage.
You can probably find recipes around the web on how to locate the small files that are causing your issues.
Example: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3476 ... being-used
Personally, I'm at 14% on my / partition, and 1% on my Greyhole data drives.
