Crashplan and headless HDA

I had issues getting Crashplan to install, but this morning it finally installed on my HDA.

I'm not able to configure it, however. I'm not sure if this is because my HDA is headless. I've configured Putty with Xming, and I've tried FreeXer as indicated on this page:

https://wiki.amahi.org/index.php/Crashp ... Forwarding

When I type in CrashPlanDesktop as the root user, nothing happens. No windows launch.

Am I missing something I need on my HDA to be able to use the remote X Server? I would really like to get this app working after finally getting it to install, so any help is appreciated.

Check to see that the app installed without errors. That can be done by viewing the app install log in /var/log folder.

It looks like everything went fine with the install, according to the logs :)

I was able to get into my HDA's CrashPlan interface via the link at the bottom of the wiki article. Using that tutorial (on Crashplan's site) I'm able to view Crashplan's interface on both my Windows machine and my Ubuntu machine. That's using port forwarding though.

I'm still curious if there may be something going on on my HDA that's preventing seeing it on a remote X server. Do I have to have a GUI installed on my headless HDA for it to display on the remote X server? I don' think I installed a GUI when I built the HDA, since I built it to be headless. This is my first headless machine, though, so I'm curious about this. Especially since I've considered installing VNC and wonder if I need a GUI package installed for that?

Not sure why it's not working, but headless is definitely complicating the issue. If you install the Amahi VNC app, it will install the necessary parts you need to be able to see the desktop.

That might be your best solution. Unfortunately headless leaves off parts that are typically needed for a desktop application. Crashplan is just that for initial setup, so I would expect VNC to solve your problem.

was this ever resolved?

I'm having the same issue of 'nothing' happen after entering 'CrashPlanDesktop'.

no errors in the install log (I did a full uninstall/reinstall), and I'm connecting to the headless server thru UltraVNC Viewer.

The CrashPlan Amahi wiki page provides a link to the same guidance. Always a good idea to check the wiki first when experiencing issues.

I did review the wiki, and that method does work, but forces me to keep changing the .ini file on my laptop in order to admin the server or my local crash plan

What do you have to change? I don't know of any other solutions.

Well, I was hoping it would run thru the vnc, obviously.

I need to change the .ini to either point to the amahi server, or the local laptop, depending on what backup I was looking at
