vnstat - no access from non-host computers?

Postby kevinor » Sat Jan 08, 2011 5:37 pm

I installed vnstat as per instructions, and it was all working great.

Now I cannot access http://vnstat unless I'm on the actual amahi box. It is still tracking the network activity though.

Any ideas? Could this in any way be related to "home.com" actually going to an internet page rather than something on the amahi computer?

Yes, sounds like a DNS issue. Have tou tried http://vnstat.domain.com with the domain.com being whatever you replaced home.com with.

If you are not using Amahi for DHCP and DNS server, this is a contributing factor.

I didn't replace home.com with anything, so vnstat.home.com should be what's left, and that doesn't work either. I use openDNS on the router, so I get the "page not found" open dns page. I do allow the server to act as the DHCP server, I don't recall configuring any DNS setting at all however.

Can you access any other hda webapps from other computers on your network?

Have you configured the DNS settings on each computer to point to your server?

For example, if the IP of your hda is 192.168.1.10, you would set the DNS entry for each of the other computers to point to that address.

Well, funny you ask. WebVNC worked in much the same manner. Good for like a day, then not working at all.

I haven't reconfigured any of the computers dns entries. I will change this evening when I get home this afternoon.

I just checked my settings. Everything is set to automatic. And since the Amahi server is the DHCP server, the DNS is also set to its address (The IP of the amahi server is 192.168.0.10, and that's what I get from ipconfig on my Win 7 machine for both DHCP and DNS servers.)

I feel like I'm missing something simple.

Hello,

Make sure you are not using DNS on your router. Some allow DNS to be set there. Did you release/renw IP addresses on your clients?

Thanks, solved the problem. Turns out there were still some lingering router settings that slipped by.
