Well, please don't take this as preaching, it's nothing like that, only that Maildir is what I have experience with...
I believe Maildir will also fit the bill for all of your needs.
From the Maildir article on Wikipedia :
"Maildir is a widely-used format for storing e-mail that does not require application-level file locking to maintain message integrity as messages are added, moved and deleted. Each message is kept in a separate file with a unique name. All changes are made using atomic filesystem operations so that the filesystem handles file locking concurrency issues. A Maildir is a directory (often named Maildir) with three subdirectories named tmp, new, and cur."
And, from the mutt article on Wikipedia:
"Mutt supports most mail formats (notably both mbox and Maildir) and protocols (POP3, IMAP, etc)."
My setup, from the link I posted above, uses this format and it is stored in the /home/nemolomen/maildir folder.
Just pointing out options you may not know you have.
