One thing I'd really like to see in v5, that I hasn't seen mentioned here or on the roadmap page: Feature #61, password protection for the setup pages.
This could be implemented with a choice of using either the root password, for situations where there is only one administrator, or another password for situations where you might want to delegate some power to another user. If the "another password" option is chosen, the root password should be used to authenticate when changing back to using the "root password" option. If it is possible to provide a choice that is.
And since I'm here: I'd like to thank all of the developers and contributors for all of the work you've done. I really appreciate it. It has made my home network administration SO much easier.
I'd like to be involved with Amahi development/documentation more but I'm having a bit of a rough year workwise. I've been working 6 day weeks since April and 7 day weeks for the past 34 days with no end in sight except maybe Christmas vacation. One of the joys of working at a small company becoming a medium sized company.
As it is, I only have time to either ask or answer questions periodically and try to keep up with all of the changes. In fact, it's only been two weeks since upgrading our HDA to Fedora 10.
Anyway, thanks again and I look forward to a time when I can become more involved.

this was not in the list and now it is. it was actually coming and we are implementing this. we forgot to add it to the list. thanks for reminding us!One thing I'd really like to see in v5, that I hasn't seen mentioned here or on the roadmap page: Feature #61, password protection for the setup pages.
yes, in this first implementation we will try and make it work to 99% level. i.e. not go overboard in security testing. work on the major stuff to provide some level of security first and then work on the full security later. This could be implemented with a choice of using either the root password, for situations where there is only one administrator, or another password for situations where you might want to delegate some power to another user. thanks! more help (documentation, testing, editing and cleaning apps, coding ...) is always welcome! join the amahi-devel mailing list! And since I'm here: I'd like to thank all of the developers and contributors for all of the work you've done. Re: The Official Roadmap Draft for Amahi 5 and later versions..
Alright ichat called me out.... I guess I'll join in lol.
One of the biggest issues for me is the speed at which we race to release a candidate before documentation is updated.
Rampage537 (aka Greg) and I have been working on the documentation off and on for awhile now. I would like to see a seperate mailing list for individuals who work on the documentation. I'm technical to a point but my main strength is in the documentation.
cpg we had something similar once or we attempted to. Whatever happened to it?

Re: The Official Roadmap Draft for Amahi 5 and later versions..
hi peter nice to get you into the tread,
here's a new (small list) to comment on
requirements for: version 6:
that are in my view a requirement or sorts.
note that i took into consideration that some of these ideas may also help to make distro independance easier.
edit: add paste-examples of the xpi-like web-app-packages amahi should be looking into... /edit

here's a new (small list) to comment on
requirements for: version 6:
that are in my view a requirement or sorts.
- a cdrom based install medium (so no more dvd)
- the cdrom immage should be as small as possible
- no office suite, image editors sound (not even alsa if i can help it)
- optional (in the installer) a minimal gnome (or other Desktop like *box or lxde - but headless by default..)
- the whole hda core stuff should be in the cdrom also ...
so not the hda-apps just the install scripts the management gui etc.
- that cdrom should also include the choise to either run it as a stand-alone peer file server or as a network Primairy Domain Controler, or as secondairy DC. - this wil leverage the possibility for office (sbs) use ...
- there should better support for 'aplications'
- New Documentations
- An Easy fraimwork to install them (ie our own kind of packages ) (compare to to mozilla's xpi format if you will... ) package file & install file - examples.
- A uniform installation of webbased software (ie in /opt/appname )
- there should be an investigation to determin if amahi-core should be running on a diferent httpd than its web-apps. in this case the faulty web-app will not crash of deny amahi's access.
note that i took into consideration that some of these ideas may also help to make distro independance easier.

Even though im considered to be an IT Specialist,
you shouldn't ask me linux (command) specific questions,
for in general i'm only able to help with more generic problems.

Re: The Official Roadmap Draft for Amahi 5 and later versions..
This is to be used for continuing the discussion and natural progression of Amahi. If you are not a developer please stay with Fedora 10 instructions.
I have F11 running reasonably well with a little tweaking on apps and certain other features that I have indicative to my system and how I like it to run.
As a general consensus in the community how well is 4.3-8 running with F11 with HDACTL 2.44-20?
What changes are still pending to the platform?
What additions, if any, are still outstanding?
Is anyone having any intermittant issues?
Is anyone experiencing random fluctuations of any kind?
Are there any portions or sections within the dashboard that users feel unstable?
What updates are still pending?
Are we ready for a release within a few weeks?
Are we continuing with F11 or bootstrap unto F12?
Comments, concerns, questions?

Re: The Official Roadmap Draft for Amahi 5 and later versions..
Fedora 12 looks quite good and the new installer released today also looks pretty good so far (have not heard from marcel yet).
So I think it's looking good to jump to Fedora 12.

I installed F12 today and used the new amahi installer. Everything went perfect. I decided to do F12 updates after amahi was installed. Seems to work better that way.
The new installer is sweet and shows the install progress in FireFox as it's working. If you have not tried it yet, you need to. Awesome job cpg as usual !!

Re: The Official Roadmap Draft for Amahi 5 and later versions..
I also installed Friday night the f12 repo with the new installer and i think it is another step in the good direction. Great job. Is it possible to place a icon onto the desktop of fedora what is activating the hda-install command?
I think it is a good idea to jump to Fedora 12. I think it is importend to support Windows 7 (PDC).
What i said in a other post i have some old hardware maybe that can become my amahi test rig. Like to test it on a physical machine.

Re: The Official Roadmap Draft for Amahi 5 and later versions..
when i read the comments above, id have to say that FC12 sounds like a nice-2-have ...
but to be honnest, this also sounds like problems...
if my assumptions are anywhere near correct - 'we re now stuck with FC10 (current), FC11 - in beta - and fc12 (latest and greatest),
in my opionion we're allready cooping with a develloper shortage.
so id like to ask people halt on working on 3 sides simultaniously, as it will only slow development down ...
to 'fix' this, i would urge people to either stick with F10 (production use), or to move to F12 and help us to get amahi running there...
