Amahi 7 Express disk RC3!

Postby cpg » Wed Jul 10, 2013 4:20 pm

We're happy to announce the third release candidate for the Amahi 7 express disc!

NOTE: INSTALLING WITH THE DEFAULT WILL DESTROY (REPARTITION AND FORMAT) YOUR ENTIRE MAIN DISK!!

As usual, the url is not listed here directly on purpose to avoid swamping our staging server by web crawling spiders (put http:// in front of this url below in a browser to download the ISO):

Code: Select all

alpha.amahi.org/tmp/Amahi-7-RC3-x86_64-DVD.iso
It's about an 824MB download (a little more than a standard CD -- we did not optimize for this yet).

In this release the installer will ask for the install code and TWO reboots will take place -- one from the installer to a first boot, which is when Amahi installs, then one more reboot after Amahi installs, with a static IP in place. In addition, the installer:

- forces users to select a language
- forces users to select a timezone
- forces users to set up a root user at least
- the default pre-selects storage to standard partitions (no lvm) and full disk, but the user can override this
- the default pre-selects the keyboard to 'US'. this should not matter much, since it's a server and no desktop is expected, though the user can set it

Happy testing and please report bugs and workarounds!

Test install did not behave as you indicated. After initial install, it rebooted to the console. I logged in and nothing was different from the previous version. Would still require manual install via hda-install.

Checked for logs and all I saw was the same ruby log in /tmp.

oh boy. do you still have the VM?

the logs are now going into /root/

and should be hda-install-<timestamp>.log and a corresponding hda-install-express-<timestamp>.log

that should contain juicy details of why the install failed!

oh man ...
network is not up by the time these are started --- though it ought to be, by configuration.

the good news is that rebooting might work.

again -- logs in /root/

but this is not too user-friendly ..
we should think of a better solution that is more user friendly than this.

The log files I posted came from /root.

yes, i know. i meant to say that a reboot will launch the installer, until it installs successfully. logs will be created each time.

in another boot the network may be up faster and the installer should work.

but still, feels like a race condition.

Re: Amahi 7 Express disk RC3 -- scratch that, RC4!

Postby cpg » Thu Jul 11, 2013 4:45 am

Hi,

Just posted Amahi-7-RC4-x86_64-DVD.iso, with changes to make the installer wait increasingly longer for network availability. It's interesting because i have seen failures, but the network is always working by the time I login as root.

The system should reboot shortly after the initial reboot after installation, so don't freak out if it reboots unexpectedly.

Please test and report!

Got an error early in the install. It did not show it, but right after I tried to select time zone, it said there is an error and quit.
