Amahi 7 Express disk RC1!

Postby cpg » Sat Jul 06, 2013 5:48 am

Hi!

Happy to announce the first packaged release of Amahi 7, in the form of the Release Candidate 1 release of the Express Disc!

WARNING: INSTALLING WITH THIS ISO WILL DESTROY (REPARTITION AND FORMAT) YOUR ENTIRE MAIN DISK!!

This release is based on Fedora 19 and it has a base Amahi 7 install .. without much testing, so we'd like to keep a list of issues somewhere (wiki, bug tracker, not sure) ...

The url is not listed here directly on purpose to avoid swamping the server:

Code: Select all

alpha.amahi.org/tmp/Amahi-7-x86_64-RC1-DVD.iso
It's about an 824MB download (a little more than a standard CD -- we did not optimize for this).

Happy testing and please report bugs and workarounds!

Thanks to all that helped develop and test to get us to this point and thanks for your patience!

When you say over-ride your entire main disc, please describe what is done...

does the (chosen?) sda/b/c drive get completely partitioned? what partitions does it make and what size?

Clarified above -- yeah, be careful with the express cd.

Same as the previous express cd release -- it takes over and partitions the entire drive to be used as root (except /boot, i think), and puts the recommended amount of swap (2x the RAM, i think).

We may disable the fully-automatic install before release and allow people to select timezone, language, keyboard and they will be able to select the disk partitioning, but we may default to the whole drive.

after fixing a few things, including a work-around for an upstream bug in fedora related to rubygems and based on your feedback please check out alpha.amahi.org/tmp/Amahi-7RC2-x86_64-DVD.iso and report any other issues you come across.

the install logs should be in a file /tmp/amahi-install-text.log after the install boots for the first time and the login prompt shows up (which is after the installer finished).

if it fails, please run hda-install <yourinstallcode> by hand as root and report the errors (with logs, if possible).

cheers!

Will the previous install method for F18 work on a minimal install of F19? I'm extremely uncomfortable with this taking over the entire disk with LVM. However, good job on F19!

I think it should (using the f19 repo), but i am not sure if anyone has tested it.

we set the express disc to NOT use LVM. standard partitioning.

Installed, but don't think Amahi did. If it did, it's not working. The only log I could find in tmp is a ruby error.

Also the root password says it's set on when installing, but it still needed to be set. There was a prompt for install code, then it quickly finished which makes me think it is not installing Amahi.

I can do a manual Amahi install and post results here if it helps.

oh, i see that error is from the web-based installer ... so i guess the service failed to start.

where was this error?

also, how do you know the root password was not set?
did the system ask? if so, when?

thanks for the report.

I look forward to another version. The root password said it was set, but I did not set it so presumed it needed to be set. When I selected it during install, it allowed me to set it. I also set the initial user as well.

The error I reported did not show up during install. I went looking for the log in the /tmp directory and noticed this was there.

Hope my feedback helped.
