While I do appreciate the hard work of individuals who are contributing their own time to advance Amahi, but with F14 already having reached its end-of-life, is there a sense on how much progress has been made on the next version of Amahi and when we are likely to see it released?

On a related topic, I would like to think that Ubuntu 12.04 being LTS, might be the platform of choice for Amahi. Is Ubuntu going to get prominence over Fedora anytime soon?

Thanks

We are doing our best to get Amahi ready for Fedora 16. However, as you know this is an all volunteer project. We are hoping to have it ready by the end of March, but that is barring there are no unforeseen issues.

While Ubuntu progress has been great, it's not ready for prime time. Will it become the Amahi platform of choice in the future, hard to say. I don't see Amahi switching to Ubuntu any time soon as there is still a lot of work to be done. Fedora will continue to be the platform of choice.

Sorry, I know that is not what you were hoping to hear. We are doing out best to move things forward, but it takes time.

So here it is, the end of the first week of April and no news from development. I do have Amahi running on Fedora 16 with issues:
  • I have to restart DHCP every time I boot the system.
  • DLNA is not available.
  • When Fedora updates and replaces greyhole, I have to re-install the hda-greyhole package. Why is this an issue?

Hello

We are still working on Fedora 16 for Amahi. Hope to be positioned for an April release. Still have issues to sort out.

Watch Facebook and the wiki for updates.

Is it safe to assume now this is a dead project? I see development going into Ubuntu 12.04 which of course will give us the advantage of security updates for a long time for the base OS. Have migrated server over to Windows 8 server for testing with drive pools which are VERY nice. However, that was just testing and now need to decide if I should wait for release or try the Ubuntu, though greyhole is a must.

Using Git, I'm working on some suggested updates for docs.amahi.org and I'm confused by the seemingly contradictory statements below.

http://docs.amahi.org/releases.html states:
There are two currently supported releases of Amahi.
Amahi sits on top of some great Linux distributions: Fedora and Ubuntu.
The latest stable release of Amahi is for Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (Long Term Support).
The previous stable release is based on Fedora 14.
http://docs.amahi.org/fedora-14.html states:
The latest release for Amahi is based on Ubuntu 12.04. Installing on Fedora is not supported.
I have two questions that could help clarify what is intended to be conveyed by the above:

1. Is it really the case that Fedora is not supported?

2. At any one time, is support only provided for the latest stable release?

The intent of that comment is we will not release any additional apps for Fedora 14 or add any functionality. For example if we go live with a BETA app now, it will only be for Ubuntu. If we add some new feature to the Amahi platform, it will only be for Ubuntu.

Fedora 14 is in what we term "maintenance mode" meaning that if a bug is found in the platform, we would try to fix it. Currently I am unaware of any problems.

Our latest stable release will always be the one which gets new features and apps. Ideally it would be nice to do more, but with an all volunteer team of folks, which is quite small, there just is not sufficient resources.

I hope that answers your questions.

And whats about Fedora 17??? There is a f17.amahi.org-repo online but all packages inside are for f16.

We are in early development of Fedora 17. We will announce once we have something for users to test.

While I cannot say when it will be, I am hopeful in the next month or so we will be looking for testers. Stay tuned.
