As a workaround I reinstalled using the Minimal CD rather than Express to avoid the creation of the admin user. Everything is ok now.

Thanks for the advice ... I've tried your suggestions and still no luck. I haven't made any manual config changes. I could try restarting the HDA.

Regarding the Express CD, would you recommend re-installing using a different method, e.g. Minimal CD? It's a bit of work but doable.
