This is a good point. I've lived over 5 years in one place, and have only had one power outage more than 5 minutes. So even having a UPS without the automatic shutdown capability would be better than nothing?

Ok, I think I'll punt for now. Past power failures haven't caused this problem, so hopefully future ones won't be a problem either. I have it on a surge protector, so that should help somewhat I hope.

The hard drive is only a couple of months old so I really hope it's not that. I've reinstalled the apps and they seem to be functioning normally. I'll keep an eye out for any odd behavior.
