Re: Where do I do the port fowarding? My DSL modem or my rou
People get confused with port forwarding. It's somehow challenging.. For me the challenge is the approximately 15,000 speciality terms and acronyms combined with 20,000 menus and sub-menus on my router and modem. :) Anyway, thanks for your help. I might be rock and rolling. The Amahi panel now tell...

Re: Whre do I do the port fowarding? My DSL modem or my rout
Wherever your firewall is. Some DSL modems have one. OK, thanks for the tip (and generally for the help) But, wow did I do something wrong! I managed to knock myself totally off the internet and had to do a hard reset of the modem. All the instructions make this seem easy but I'm sure having a Dick...

Where do I do the port fowarding? My DSL modem or my router?
I use a wifi/router hooked to a DSL modem.
Where do I do the port fowarding? The router? The modem? Both?
It seems like both can foward port 1194 to 192.168.1.10 (which is what I have Amahi set to.)
(thanks for tolerating another newbie question)

Oh... I get it now. (palm hits forehead).
The red is for Fedora, green for Ubuntu.
Thanks.

Is OpenVPN really in "Alpha" stage? (newbie question)
When I try to install OpenVPN from the Amahi dashboard it says that Open is in "Alpha" development and not ready for regular users.
http://www.amahi.org/apps/openvpn
This can' be correct.
Should I install the Ubuntu repository version of OpenVPN? (Rather than the Amahi app version.)

Re: Should I use an old rack server for Amahi?
Moredruid,
I really appreciate the warning about the sound of the rack. Clearly, my first job is to find a place for it. I live in an apartment, so this isn't going to be easy but I've not given up, yet. I will take the noise issue seriously.

Re: Should I use an old rack server for Amahi?
Racks are cool, and should definitely give you geek cred. :D Thanks for the feedback. I gather that the rack itself should work fine with Fedora and Amahi. The bigger issue is whether a rack is good for me because of the power consumption and the noise. I will have to think about that one. I would ...

RadioZ,
Exactly... FreeGeek. I didn't mention their name because I don't know how famous they are. You probably remember the rack of old servers in the corner.
Every time I go in there, I admire them and think how fun it would be to have one.
Would you recommend Amahi and a rack server?

Should I use an old rack server for Amahi?
Here in Portland we have a used computer store that sells old rack servers from about $60 to $120. Would one of these work for Amahi? If so, any buying advice? I'm intrigued! I've never owned a rack server and think they look cool. Not the best reason to buy a computer, I know, but, it would also he...

Re: Where do I put my files on the server?
Thanks for the tips... I'm not near the server, right now, but I'll experiment with both your suggestions later. I suspect that part of my problem is that I have never fully grasped Linux's file structure and file privileges system. Even on Ubuntu -- my main OS these days -- I still get lost all the...
