The IPsec-VPN app is a pure IPsec VPN not an L2TP/IPsec, so the client you've referred to in the original post won't work. I've not used a linux client with it previously as OpenVPN seemed to do the job most of the time; the main motivation for the app was to enable iOS devices to connect.

Ok, thanks. It sounds like somewhere along the way, afpd is throwing a wobbly at the amended AppleVolumes.default and therefore not registering the share with avahi. Could you post or fpaste /var/log/afpd.log for me?
