Does it make a difference if I have a pre-exisiting DDNS through my internet provider?... What about CentOS?

Hello... New to servers, I have an HP ML350 G6 with 8 X 900gb hard drives and 56gb of ram. I want to use it as a home server, I have my own DDNS with 1gb internet service. I'd like to have plex, some file sharing/sync capability, etc. I also would prefer ubuntu/debian base (more familiar with that)....
