Thank you for these suggestions. Shellinabox and Putty both allow me to open a terminal window, so I'm good. The source of my original confusion was in the third suggestion. Under my Apps tab, there is no "system" option. I have advanced settings checked. Is there anything else I'm missing?

Is there a way to access a terminal window from the console? I found the wiki section, which says to "access the HDA directly." Does that mean from a computer on my network? Or do I need to hook up a monitor and keyboard to the server? I have "advanced settings" checked, but can'...

I am very sorry for wasting your time. It was a networking issue, as you concluded. I had prematurely disabled DHCP assignment by the router before completing the installation. Of course it couldn't reach the internet. Turned it back on, rebooted everything, and completed installation. Thanks for yo...

SOLVED: No package available errors
I get "no package available" errors when I reach the part of the installation sequence to install hda-ctl and hda-platform. The preceding portions of the installation seemed to proceed normally. This is a new installation on a new drive. Many thanks for any guidance you can provide.
