Tried your suggestion, didn't work. I think I'll give up on this installation, I'll wipe the server and try again. Is there any preference between Ubuntu 12.04 server vs desktop?

I also went through the interactive troubleshooter again and I did notice something. the server prompt is appended to the curl output - i don't know if this is significant or not. Hmmm looks like there's some wrong here. I followed the instructions in the indicated bug fix.
