Looks like I jumped the gun. Still can't write to the folders as I don't have permission. However from within Ubuntu I used File > Connect to Server

I seletec Windows Share and entered the correct login details, so in theory I should be logged in with the correct permissions. Any ideas?

Ok, I've managed to work around this issue by first mounting each of the shares on the HDA and then bookmarking them. Now they appear in my bookmarks after every reboot. Not quite as nice as having them displayed within my Ubuntu folders for Music, Pictures, etc but at least I can access everything ...
