Its all a big mess. Pending testing

Postby Vertigo500 » Wed Jul 13, 2011 11:31 pm

I almost dont know where to begin.

i have a failing disk, network problems, and a Queue thats 90 000 tasks with 112 4341 spooled tasks. The network problem is all my fault, and the more i try to fix it the worse it gets, and i want to do a fresh install, but i am unsure of what will happen.

When i use the tail command, the system have showed that it is hanging on some tombstone problem i read about here, and its moving at a pace about 5 queue tasks per day. I have read that this problem will go away with an update, but i have network problems. I really wanted the queue to be finished before i did a reinstall.

I want to do a fresh install, but can i, or do i have to sort out the problems first. wich is nearly impossible?

Also here is my admission of things i did not want to admit, but here goes: http://forums.amahi.org/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=3133

Also, i am not trusting Linux/Ext3 format, because i have som files on a drive, i cannot move, and i dont understand it. And frankly i dont want to understand things like that, i already lost weeks of my life understanding Amahi, Linux and Greyhole, i just want it to work. And i am not confident of a file system that says it has moved some files, and then i still can find them in the same place.

So my question is: Can i just use NTFS file system for the Greyhole shares, or will that cause a whole world of new and exiting troubles and adventures?

I just want to add that i love the idea behind Greyhole, and kudos to gboudreau and others, but i wish this could be a lot simpler.

First off, ext3 is not your issue. It's a pretty rock solid file system. If you can't move files, it's more than likely caused by file permissions, which if you're not familiar with, you should read about. (Check here for a quick primer: http://www.tuxfiles.org/linuxhelp/filepermissions.html)

Second, you need to provide more information. I get that you have a large number of tasks that don't appear to be clearing up, that doesn't give a lot of information about the current state of things.

Some basic information you could provide:
- Greyhole version (i.e. 0.9.2 or 0.9.9)
- What do you mean by failing drive? Is it gone? Is it resetting?
- What is going on in the greyhole logs? Is it actually processing something?

You can use http://www.pastebin.com to post the contents of:
- Your /etc/greyhole.conf
- Your /etc/samba/smb.conf
- Your /var/log/greyhole.log

If files are in your landing zone and have not yet been moved to a pool volume then changing your landing zone will 'lose' those files. I say 'lose' because those files will still exist in the old directories, but Greyhole still won't know about them. I don't think changing your landing zone is going to solve your problem, however. You're better off figuring out why you're getting this huge number of tasks and go from there.

I agree that Greyhole is not a dead simple application and it most certainly can get into situations where you need to roll up your sleeves and dig into it. But where there's challenge there's also reward. It's a useful, flexible, and free application. There are solutions out there that do this kind of thing for you (i.e. Drobo) but they don't come cheap. (A 4-bay Drobo costs at least $350!)

Rock solid? more information needed? there's also reward and It's a useful, flexible, and free application you say?

Challenge accepted! I will dig in, and try to figure things out. The disk is failing because of bad sectors. I did buy a new one, but have yet to install it(in amahi), because of said errors. When is a good time to install, and how did i format it again?

Stay tuned. I will post said things.

Also here is my admission of things i did not want to admit, but here goes: http://forums.amahi.org/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=3133

Greyhole: http://pastebin.com/zNBvHHv9

SMB: http://pastebin.com/XY43eJSM

uname -r; rpm -q samba hda greyhole : http://pastebin.com/N4LQxZxu

mount; fdisk -l; df -h; greyhole --stats: http://pastebin.com/JLRriFJ8

greyhole --wiew-queue : http://pastebin.com/nyWyv5jG

tail /var/log/greyhole.log: http://pastebin.com/NqUDrdd3

and the "real" tail command: http://pastebin.com/sB8aycer

Seems to me its hanging on a file. This is where it stops. This is not a filename, its the beginning of a filepath, and then it hangs like this the whole day. What to do?

Two things. First, is /var/hda/files/drives/drive4 the drive that's dying? I see your log has a number of pending tombstones for this drive which is a little odd.

Second, it looks like you typo'ed --view-queue as --wiew-queue, can you provide the output of --view-queue? It could be helpful. So far I'm still not sure what's going on.

All the files in the log from disk4 with tombstones are files i deleted or moved to other share. There was many small files from over the years, that have been copied many times, and i tried to get rid of some of them.

The system says 1.5 TB Hard Disk ATA ST31500541AS - Disk has many bad sectors. and when i click on it it says /dev/sdb monted as drive 7

And then it says in another window, drive7 has only 1.2 gb disk space remaining.

greyhole --view-queue: http://pastebin.com/h80RqK6t

Question 1: is it possible to download updates for samba and greyhole on a windows computer, and then usb stick it to the amahi server? If so, how?

Question 2: Can i move the landing zone to the new disk without access to the HDA dashboard.

Question 3: Is it possible to i gain access to the hda dashboard without network, to set it to duplicate all files, so i wont loose to much?

I now have transfered the greyhole log, but its 2 Gb, how do i submit it?

I know that the landing zone for some shares is on drive 7. Here is a screenshot.

Now i have added the new drive.

Code: Select all

Finally, you'll need to configure Greyhole to select your new partition. To configure Greyhole, Advanced Settings must be enabled under Setup > Settings. In the Shares > Storage Pool page of your Amahi dashboard, you'll see a list of mounted partitions, with checkboxes next to each, allowing you to include those partitions in your storage pool. You should now have a new row in there, referring to /var/hda/files/drives/sdb1. Select it (click the checkbox). That's it. Your new hard drive just increased your Greyhole storage pool capacity.
I dont have access to the HDA Dash: http://forums.amahi.org/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=3133
How can i make the disk a part of the pool, is there a command?

Also, is there a way to update samba and greyhole with a usb-stick?

New day, new logs.

Here is the tail from last night, hanging: http://pastebin.com/cnL59ms8

Here is the tail for today, hanging, but in other place: http://pastebin.com/3w3NyHhQ

Here is the queue: http://pastebin.com/RgvDmxid

As far as i can tell, it has completed 2 tasks. It will take some time to complete the queue.....

And the new [root@localhost ~]# mount; fdisk -l; df -h; greyhole --stats: http://pastebin.com/9GNke06f

You can see the new disk.
