non free applications? monthly sub?
non free applications? monthly sub?
Hi, I was thinking of using Amahi at home, but when I saw that the dlna program was non free (but open source btw) I told myself was not right. Then, to see that I should upgrade my server for a adfree server for a monthly subscription, well that's just too much. I don't want my server to be hijacked by a software that lives on open source that should be free.
Re: non free applications? monthly sub?
Let me begin by stating that Amahi is not charging for Open Source software. We do not charge for the software, but a convenience fee for packaging the application, configuring it, and making it a one-click install. Furthermore, Amahi subscriptions are a choice, not a necessity. As an Amahi user, I do not subscribe and everything works just fine for me. So much easier than building a server from the ground up.
Amahi provides so much for FREE, out of the box and pre-configured to include dynamic DNS. We also provide many applications, packaged, configured, and made into a one-click install, most for FREE. We also provide free tech support. So why is paying a convenience fee for some apps a problem?
Keep in mind, there is nothing stopping users from installing the apps themselves, downloading the free software from the author, and then configuring it on their own.
You might be interested to know the core team is all volunteers, donating their time at no cost to the users. It takes quite a team to move this project forward and manage all the applications provided, most at no cost, for the community.
Ok, off my soap box. All I can say is if you do not agree with the Amahi policy, you have 2 choices. One is to use it and be happy with how easy it is to setup the home server. The second alternative is to not use it and look elsewhere for something similar for FREE. Either way, you have a choice. We hope you become a part of our community, but will understand if you don't.

Re: non free applications? monthly sub?
@philwire: it's not uncommon to be confused about free as in "beer" vs. free as in "freedom".
Amahi is the latter and what we do is in line with the FSF and what they support -- we do not restrict your freedom and provide source code for the apps. In fact even Amahi is open source.
The subscriptions are for services.
